About Transmission / Drivetrain Parts

The clutch connects the engine's crankshaft to the transmission so that they can be either locked together and spin at the same speed, or be decoupled. Clutches allow us to smoothly engage a spinning engine to a non-spinning transmission by smoothly transferring the rotation. A clutch works because of friction between a clutch disc and a flywheel. A pressure plate keeps the clutch disc against the flywheel -- and the transmission input shaft and engine crankshaft rotating together -- unless the clutch pedal is depressed by the driver.
